What is COVID-19?

As per Gold Coast Health (https://www.goldcoast.health.qld.gov.au/coronavirus-covid-19), it’s respiratory illness, which means it affects the parts of your body you use to breathe: your nose, throat and lungs. If you’re sick with COVID-19, your symptoms might include:

If you’re sick with coronavirus, your symptoms might include: Fever Cough Sore throat Fatigue Shortness of breath.

The symptoms are common to many respiratory ailments, so at this stage, only people who meet particular screening criteria will be tested for COVID-19.  This includes testing people with symptoms who:

Have been in close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19

AND

Have a Fever and Experiencing  Respiratory Symptoms such as those listed above

There is no specific treatment for coronavirus (COVID-19).

However, many of the symptoms can be treated and therefore treatment is based on each patient’s clinical condition.

At this stage there is no vaccine.   The best way to protect yourself from COVID-19 is to practice good hand and respiratory hygiene such as:

  • clean hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rubs
  • cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or flexed elbow when coughing or sneezing
  • avoid contact with anyone who has symptoms such as fever, a cough, sore throat, fatigue, and shortness of breath
  • stay home if you are unwell.

You should also try and stay at least 1.5m away from people coughing or sneezing.
